Taking the first step

Hello bloggers and visitors,

First of all I would like to thank Racco for the great opportunity to be writing for this great initiative that is to provide hints and tips for health and well being.

This is my first post so I would like to talk to you about some of my own experiences towards a healthier life style.

My name is Marcos De Marco and I was born in Sao Paulo city, Brazil. I am an Italian-Lebanese descendent and as you can imagine I was surrounded by a big family and delicious food, luckily I was also very active and my childhood was fulfilled with a lot of activities. Soccer was my passion so I was never concern with what to eat because soccer is a very demanding sport and I used to burn a lot of calories every day, I also played a lot of other sports until I graduated from high school and that’s when my life changed. After graduating from high school I decided that I wanted to work for awhile until I figure out what career to pursue. Since I was a little lost on what to do in college I decided to help my mother with her business, she had a small home business delivering food to business around the neighborhood at the lunch hour so I start helping with the delivery and soon I was deeply involved with the business.  After 6 months our business grew so much that we decided we should rent a house and open a restaurant. You are probably asking yourself why is he telling us all this? Well after we opened the restaurant I went from 150 lbs to 200 lbs on a 5’6” body frame and I was just 23 years old. Why did I gain that much weight? Looking back the only thing I see was a guy that forgot about himself and didn’t care anymore, I was too worried about my job and too focused on the things I thought were important at that time. I was eating a lot of food, sweets and had a soda machine right in front of me so just do the math, a lot a calories in and none out.

After almost 2 years I quit the restaurant job and that was hard to do it because I felt like was my special place even though I was unhealthy and stressed. One day I looked myself in the mirror and what I saw was just very scary, I could not recognize that man, what happened to him? He used to be an athletic person, he used to play soccer and run, I was in shock. That day I decided to take the first step, that day I decided that I was going to do whatever I had to do not to be like that anymore and the first thing I did was put my tennis shoes on and go out for a run. It was a very hard decision to make, I used to try to find any excuse possible to stay at home or not go running and exercise. “I don’t have time”, “my day is too short “or “I’m so tired”.  I fought trough the negativity and it paid off.  Today after a lot of commitment and discipline I realized that if I don’t take care of myself who will? After struggling with my weight for 5 years I could never imagine I would become a fitness specialist and would be helping people accomplish their goals.

So dear reader no matter what your goals are, if you want to lose 3, or 5, or 10 lbs, or run a mile, a 5 k even run a Marathon, whatever your goal in life is: “We will always have to take the first step “and I am not saying it is easy because I know for a fact it is not, but also it is not impossible, think about what you want to accomplish and take the first step. I know you can do it; every step forward will be a step towards your goal.

On my next post I’ll be talking about how one can start on an exercise program find motivation and give you some exercise tips so we can be feeling good and healthy.
